Better Practices

To ensure that caregiving responsibilities are no longer rendered invisible or become structural barriers, targeted systemic changes are needed. We have gathered inspirational examples and resources for you.

Family-Friendly Residencies

Residency programs are an essential part of a successful artistic and literary practice. It is therefore crucial that artists, writers, and curators with caregiving responsibilities are also able to participate in residency programs. We show you where this is possible.
Context

Our list features family-friendly artist residencies, organized by country. However, the specific conditions of each residency vary. Some programs allow artists to bring children and, in some cases, an additional caregiver. Certain residencies actively support artists with caregiving responsibilities by offering increased funding, covering additional expenses, or providing on-site childcare. Others simply offer accommodations suitable for families, without additional support measures.

Important: Please contact the residency directly for further information. We provide an overview only and do not offer individual consultation.

Is something missing?
If you know of a family-friendly residency that is not included here—or if a listed residency is, in your experience, not family-friendly—please let us know using our submission form.

Sources: This list is based on research by Other Writers, the research by Cultural Reproducers, the IGBK database, and our own research.

Access Rider – Tools for more Accessibility
An Access Rider is a document in which artists outline their specific working conditions and needs – such as accessibility, care responsibilities, rest periods, or communication preferences. Originating from the Disability Justice movement, it makes structural exclusions visible in order to enable collaboration with as few barriers as possible. The concept is increasingly being expanded: care responsibilities can also be included in an Access Rider, making care work a shared consideration rather than an individual burden.
